Are there new air purifiers for 2012?

No. Just a few upgrades. Despite a sluggish dollar the cost of air cleaners has not diminished. But in the reviews below you'll find some great values for your dollar.

Too many air purifier choices? Too much info? You're not alone. Follow these 3 steps to remove confusion:

1) Watch the video on the 10 air purifier technologies so you'll know which you need. The Home Page has a video explaining the pros and cons of all 10. Most air purifiers only have 3-4 types of technology, but I am recommending more comprehensive models.

No matter what the problem (EX: allergens, mold, dust, cat hair, Chemicals, Smoke, etc.) each requires a different set of technologies.

2) Measure the square feet of the room. Most air cleaners determine their square footage based on seven foot ceilings. By doing this you'll avoid under or over powered models for the room size.

3) The comparison chart can then help you choose several that match your price budget and tech you require.

4) Then review the video on these models, read the specifications and comments on each one using the info from the preceding steps.

Dec 7, Replacement Bulbs Ionic Breeze

Someone gave me an Ionic Breeze GP 4.0 Silent Air Purifier. Germicidal protection. Sharpier Image Design. They use to get the bulbs for me, but they have moved out of state and I need to know where that I may get the replacement bulbs. On the bulb it has G15T8 Ultraviolent UV - C HG on it. So if you could please let me know where I may get these I would appreciate it. Thank you very much.

I believe Phillips makes the bulb, and if you serach for "Phillips G15T8" you'll find them for about $10 at many sites. Just make sure it looks like the one in your unit.

Air Purifiers in 2012 - What's new?

Very little. Just a few new brands and several upgrades. Despite the job climate the prices of air purifiers are still full price, and sales of some companies fell last year. But there are ood value in the reviews below to spend your money well.

Apr 18, Oreck ProShield™ Plus Air Purifier for our new born baby's room?

We are looking for an air purifier for our new born baby's room. I am looking at the Oreck ProShield™ Plus Air Purifier but I have seen controversial results. I read it only cleans 33% of the air that runs through it and it is really loud on the high speed setting and on the low speed setting it doesn't clean at all.

What is your professional opinion?

A: Hi JJ,

For a baby's room there are several things I look for, putting the baby's developing lungs and safety first and foremost. I'll leave my Proshield comments further down the page.

1) HEPA would be the first preference since HEPA is the best for removing the particles in the air (dust, pollen, etc.). The Oreck Proshield does not have HEPA. The downside to HEPA - you have to change the filters periodically so check replacement cost before you buy.

2) UV is good for removing viruses, germs, and some bacteria so is a good immune system protection.

3) Negative Ions - A Negative Ionizer is different from an "ionizer" which uses or produces both positive and negative ions using plates or grids. These negative ions have positive effects on a baby's (and adults) lungs as shown in European research on baby's with lung problems.

4) Look for a unit which can do an effective cleaning job at 20dB (volume) or less which is quiet enough to sleep. If it's a small room then you should be looking at $120-200 for a good HEPA, UV, negative ion model.

It improves brain function, reduces odors, kills mold and is natures ways of purifying the air . In nature (by the ocean or in a forest) you'll find thousands of negative ions, whereas indoors you'll find low levels so I always suggest it. I use one in my bedroom and at my work desk for better sleep and work performance.

Many air purifiers come with negative ions and you'll see it in their description. You can also find a few small Plugin negatuive ionizers and negative ion night lights as well.

As per the Oreck Proshield ...

The washable plates (called electrostatic), as found in the ORECK Proshield and other "ionizers" removes pollution but does a less than adequate job on dust and pollen. Plus the washable electrostatic plates can produce ozone at times which can irritate sensitive lungs.

The Oreck will work on smoke and pollution however. The video below shows some of the pros and cons, and some of the ongoing expenses (despite what the infomercials say). I'm not a fan of the oreck by way of the technology or the cost value.

Apr 18, Medicare for air purifiers

 

Q: Will Medicare cover the cost of air purifiers? And if so which air purifiers for allergies and asthma will medicare cover?

I've heard of medicare air purifier coverage, and I've also heard of it being denied, but I've never been in the middle of the negotiation for it. Because of the variables by state and by model you'd have to contact Medicare yourself or talk to a Doctor about it.

Here's what someone else told me:

It's possible that Medicare will pay in full for the air purifier, especially if your M.D. determines the use of an air purifier necessary and prescribes it. You would first purchase the air purifier, and then submit the receipt to Medicare for reimbursement.

Please contact Medicare to see if you're eligible for such reimbursement and to obtain proper forms to submit the receipt to them for reimbursement.

However, this is NOT the best way to proceed, as this process takes months during which time you will not have the air purifier and will have to wait for it.

Don't forget too that paying for the air purifier by credit card gives you 30 days before first (minimum) payment is due, during which time you may already be reimbursed by Medicare and would be able to pay off the entire purchase amount before even making the first payment on your CC!

May 3, Alive Air Rebrands ?

 

Is the Alive Air a Re-branded air purifier?

A: No. It is an upgrade of the earlier versions that we still sell under different names. The older versions have an earlier motor design and electronics. Some of the problems with the earlier design, plus a desire to create a more long lasting version, was the reason for the upgrade.

Here are several differences:

1) Advanced Motor - the Alive Air a re-designed motor capable of running 100,000 hours or 24/7 for 11 years (30-40% longer than the earlier intellipro model).

2) 5 Year Warranty - The older version has a 3 year warranty and the Alive Air is 5. This was due to the motor upgrades.

3) Square Footage - The Alive Air is 865 square feet, rather than 650.

4) Remote Control - The Alive Air Machine has a remote control (which is nice if you want to turn off the light or the ion/uv function at night). Not a major thing but when the board was upgraded this upgrade was included.

Apr 19, Airmaster DFS Review

 

I noticed the Airmaster DFS particular brand was not mentioned in your list of top 10. Have you heard of it? If so what do you think of it and how does it compare to the Alive air machine?

A: I did a review of the Airmaster DFS some time ago and can't find where it was. (hence sorry for the delay).

I first saw this model from Rainsoft (A company known more for its water filters) in a Health Practitioners office some years ago and had a chance to look inside it.

The Airmaster is marketed primarily to Health practitioners, and the company uses it's FDA Listed Class II Medical Device to promote it that way. You won't find them for sale online as they sell only through Distributors via in-home sales.

My first impression was quiet, good HEPA, and good technologies for a small room. The price she paid for it made me say "ouch". The 1500 sq. ft. I couldn't account for based on the fan speed until I read that it produces Ozone. Ozone goes out into the room for odor and mold killing (NOT GOOD FOR SENSITIVE LUNGS).

Technologies

It uses 1) HEPA 2)several types of prefilters (for dust) 3) electrostatic 4) Carbon (with some Zeolite added which does the same as carbon) 5) UV and 6) Ozone lamp to kill odors and germs

And although they claim 8 filters:

- 2 are exactly the same (dust collectors of the same material which can be vaccumed).
- Carbon has Zeolite added (works basically the same as carbon so I'm not sure why Zeolite was added)
- Anti-Bacterial material in the filters is counted as a filter (although it merely prevents viruses and bacteria within the machine itself from forming - it does not treat viruses or germs in the room itself as UV light would do).
- uv and ozone for germs

Pros and Cons

Pros:

1) It's on wheel for handy movement if needed (it weights 36 pounds)
2) Good filtration system with 6-stages to handle dust, pollen, odor, and germs.
3) Will do a good job on dust, pollen, and gases

Cons:
1) Price. It's expensive, and expensive for replacement filters as well.
2) Seven of the " 8 stage filters " are really just multiple layers of material which all does basically the same thing - collect dust , pollen and airborne matter. I believe it sounds better in marketing than what it really is.
3) If you have sensitive lungs I would not recommend this because it does produce ozone. Ozone is good for odors and mold prevention but irritates lungs in small areas.

Conclusion

I like many things about the Airmaster DFS including the wheels, the look, and the quiet operation. I also like that they've added more than the typical 2-3 technologies. That's good. However the Price and the Ozone set me back from making it a choice for most people.

I would probably more often suggest buying 2 or even 3 good air purifiers to cover several rooms in my house for the same price. I would never recommend it for asthmatics as the Ozone will irritate lungs and could cause an asthma attack.
