Q: How do you feel about to winix plasma wave WAC 5500 air purifier? It has plasma wave technology.

A: For $299 I didn't find my Winix WAC 5500 to be my favorite air purifier for a number of reasons. When the PlasmaWave technology (which produces hydroxyl radicals similar to Ozone molecules in their oxidative effect) produces these molecules they can be a source of irritation for the lungs. That's what my experience was when I had it in a small bedroom.

It is effective for odors and chemcials in the air, but the downside of the hydroxyl radical effect has me looking for other alternatives.

The replacement filter for it is also high priced at $90 which is a full cartridge including the HEPA filter.

The total of 5 filters is good, and HEPA is always the best starting point.

The fact that it only covers 350 square feet makes this a small room air purifier, perhaps high priced for $299 (starting to show for $179 on Amazon). The fact it is made in Korea is probably some of the reaosn for the price.

The profit margin is high which is why you find many positive reviews for this model.
